Indicative Cost of Pig Rearing

Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme: Integrated Development of Small Ruminants and Rabbits, subsidies are available for sheep, goat, pig, and rabbit farming units from the Govt. of India.

As I have already provided the sample model farming unit cost for a sheep farming unit and a goat farming unit, here I am providing the same for a pig farming unit

Sample Model Unit Costs for Sheep, Goat, Pigs and Angora Rabbits


I have been getting many requests for sample model unit cost of sheep, goat, pigs and Angora rabbits units from various entrepreneurs including small farmers, marginal farmers and landless labourers.

So, I'll be providing these sample model unit costs in a series of posts in near future.

As a matter of fact, the Government of India is providing subsidy through financial institutions like Nationalised Banks, District Cooperative Banks, State Cooperative banks, Regional Rural Banks and Land Development Banks for sheep, goat, pigs and Angora rabbits under centrally sponsored schemes.National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is the main implementing agency in the country.

The capital subsidy is backended and is linked with bank finance only. The subsidy is 25% of project outlay for general category and 33.33% for SC/ST, hilly and NE states including Sikkim, subject to a maximum ceiling in each scheme and category.

To help you to understand the economics of pig breeding farm, I have prepared a summary of the project cost including essential items of investment to maximize the income from the pig farm with the latest information to my knowledge. The costs indicated below are just sample cost estimates.

The breeds of the pig considered in this cost estimate are improved/cross breeds.

Guidelines - Pig Development Scheme

Here is the brief description of the guidelines related to the Pig Development Scheme, we mentioned earlier. 

A. Implementing period and Area of operation

The scheme will be implemented during the remaining XI plan period (2010–11 and 2011-12) through out the country. The high potential 50 districts identified in 15 States however, the proposals received from other than these potential districts can also be considered for providing subsidy assistance under the scheme. The scheme is in operation from 14 July 2010.

Pig Farming in India

Few months back Government of India has announced a scheme aiming at encouraging commercial pig farming by farmers to improve performance of native breed through cross breeding.

The scheme is named as “Pig Development Scheme”.

The scheme has come in to operation with immediate effect with a total out lay of Rs. 73.55 crore for the year 2010–11 and 2011-12. The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries (DAHDF), Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, is the focal department for operating the scheme.
